The demise of Ed Reed’s illustrious NFL career seemed imminent after the Texans released the Pro Bowl safety and he passed waivers unclaimed.
Not so fast.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Reed has reached an agreement with the New York Jets.
Jets head coach Rex Ryan said “absolutely, yes,” on Wednesday when asked about wanting Reed on the team, but was quick to mention there are plenty of other older players he’d like to have back. Ryan coached Reed in Baltimore as the Defensive Line Coach and Defensive Coordinator for the Ravens from 1999-2008.
“The big picture of right now, the current football team, I’m probably not the right guy to make all those decisions,” Ryan said Wednesday, via Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com. “I think sometimes there’s a comfort level in knowing guys, without question, guys that certainly played well for you. … I’d like those guys, without question.”
Reed underwent hip surgery in the offseason that kept him out of the first two games of the regular season. His debut with Houston came against his former Ravens team in Week 3. Reed’s performance this season has been a shadow of his former self, prompting his release from Houston.
The Patriots were also reportedly interested in signing Reed, but the Jets managed to scoop him up first.
